A five-year veteran Farmers Branch Police Officer walked away with minor injuries and is glad to be alive after a driver lost control of his truck on wet roads and careened into a Farmers Branch Police Department vehicle, a fence and bounced off a house in the 13200 block of Mount Castle Drive on Friday, April 4.
The officer, working with another vehicle which was not hit, was leaning into his squad car and managed to grab the steering wheel in time to avoid being pulled under the vehicle. He walked away with only minor injuries, according to the FBPD’s Facebook post and additional information provided to the Branch Herald.
A video of the incident from the officer’s body camera and a NEST camera can be seen on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/196QXWB1Fg/
The unlicensed teenage driver claimed he was changing lanes when he lost control and swerved off the road, according to police.
The department said passersby stopped to check on the welfare of the officer and wished to offer them a sincere thank you for their service.
According to the back-up units that arrived on the scene shortly after, the officer said, “I just think I’m the luckiest person in the world right now… I’m just glad I’m alive.”
The FBPD wishes to remind all drivers of the dangers of wet roads and the importance of maintaining proper speed for conditions. They also wish to highlight the critical need for proper driver education before teens start driving on their own.
