One of North Texas's largest camera shops, Competitive Camera, is moving to Farmers Branch after 27 years in Dallas’ Design District.
The doors of the nearly 9,000 square-foot new location officially open Oct. 1 at 13614 Midway Rd. The old location closes Sept. 30.
Competitive Camera’s owner, Eugene Jabbour, said the move was driven by increasing congestion at the Design District, rising rent and a large customer base in the north.
“We wanted to make [Competitive Camera] easier for our customers to get to,” Jabbour said.
The cramped 5,000-square-foot current location was not the first spot the family-owned business called home. Competitive Camera was founded in 1982 by Jabbour’s parents, Mary and Ramsey Jabbour.
Throughout the years, the business weathered the surge of online retailers, large consumer electronics stores and smartphone photography. Despite a 2023 IBISWorld report stating the decline of brick-and-mortar camera stores, Competitive Camera marketing staffer Andy Lai said, “Throughout COVID and the years after COVID, this company's done nothing but grow."
The store offers new and used photo, video and lighting equipment. Additionally, the store offers rentals and educational workshops. The new store will provide more opportunities for demonstrating products, three times the showroom space and a dedicated used gear and rentals department.
“Everyone here shoots,” Lai said. “Everyone’s a part-time or full-time creative, so everybody on staff is knowledgeable enough to help anybody that's starting and continue that support when their business grows.”
