Chili cookoff spices up Carrollton American Legion

Posted

Twelve cooks lined a wall at the Carrollton veterans organization, bringing homemade chilis ranging from sweet and spicy to mild with venison. Cups were stacked beside the warm slow cookers, with chili ready to be poured for attendees and judges.

The American Legion Post 597 hosted its sixth annual chili cook-off and silent auction on Sept. 19. The event serves as the largest fundraiser of the year for the Legion.

The judging panel consisted of community leaders and members: Chance Oliver, a Denton County judge; Steve Babick, mayor of Carrollton; Stephen Ross, owner and beekeeper of Ross’ Rowdy Bees; and Alex Sagcal, community outreach manager of Sam Pack's Five Star Ford in Carrollton.

After the first round of door prize raffle winners were called, the winners of the chili cook-off were announced. From the judges' selection, Cassie Reynolds won third place, Alex Sagcal won second place, and Chloe Spitzer won first place. Ronny Moon won People's Choice from the community selection.
