Beer and autumn are a combination as old as time, and no event celebrates these two than Oktoberfest. Carrollton's Three Nations Brewing Co. recognized it with a day-long party on Sept. 20.
In addition to cool mugs of beer Oktoberfest-themed food was also available. Visitors ate plates of bratwurst, schnitzel sandwiches, pub burgers and, for dessert, sweet pretzels and apple strudels. From what was seen, everyone had differing choices, which speaks well about all the food. People also had the chance to drink soda and plenty of cool water, which was perfect for both children and non-drinkers who wished to participate in all the other fun.
The event included a Mug Club Charity Auction. Various mugs were offered to everyone willing to bid. The numbers went high, with many going past the hundreds for a single well-crafted cup, which raised $2,300 for Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County, Carrollton Early Childhood PTA, Carrollton Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, Paws in the City and Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Education Foundation.
A raffle also connected the community. Various prizes were given away to lucky winners with the right numbers. Every winner rose from their chair screaming and walked happily to their reward. Though there were limited prizes, there was a sense of joy that was shared by everyone there.
Other activities raised people's voices of cheers too. One of these was the sausage toss. As this competition had pairs of teammates throwing German sausages at each other for as long as possible. The contest went on for quite a while, ending with a mother and son winning. This gained much applause, but not as much as the Stein Hoist competition. A line of people each held a large glass of beer with one arm raised forward until only one person was left standing. This section was separated by gender, making the contest last twice as long. The women's side ended with last year's champion reigning victorious once again. The men’s side had a new winner, who held his glass for over five minutes. Clapping could be heard all around and got louder the longer the competition went.
After the competition, one man later blew everyone else away by holding a beer for 24 minutes and 55 seconds. Throughout the endurance, everyone cheered his name and for every minute that passed he raised a finger to show he wanted to keep going. The man didn’t stop once until his arm decided to. By the end, he was drenched in sweat and tired but still looked proud of what he accomplished that day.
After the events ended, the band Broken Code performed. Based on the local reception, Oktoberfest was thoroughly a good time.
