Editor's note: This story has been corrected with the exact wording from Omar Roman's letter.
Omar Roman, Farmers Branch City Councilmember for District 1, has announced his decision to resign from the City Council Friday, Aug. 8, to pursue his legal education at a Tier 1 law school. Roman will continue serving until a special election is held and a new representative is duly elected.
In his letter to "neighbors and friends" on city letterhead, Roman explained that he was in the midst of applying for law school during the spring 2025 campaign season.
He endorsed Farmers Branch Elementary Parent Teacher Association President Lupe Gonzalez for the District 1 city council position, writing that her commuity roots and "proven ability to bring people together make her exactly the kind of leader District 1 needs."
His letter in it's entirety is below.
Neighbors and Friends,
Serving on the Farmers Branch City Council has been one of the greatest honors of my life. The relationships I've built, the progress we've made, and the trust placed in me by our residents have made this an incredibly meaningful chapter of my public service. It's because of that deep connection and commitment that the decision to step down from my position has been especially difficult.
Earlier this year, during my campaign for re-election, I was in the midst of applying to law school. At the time, there was great excitement but also uncertainty about what the future might hold. I'm now proud to share that I have been admitted to a Tier 1 law school and have decided to pursue this next chapter in my journey.
I've always carried with me a simple lesson: leave things better than you found them. That value has guided me throughout my time on the council. Together, I know we did just that. From strengthening city services to championing transparency and inclusion, we made Farmers Branch stronger, more connected, and better positioned for the future.
To my supporters - thank you. Your unwavering belief in me, your encouragement, and your commitment to our shared vision gave me the strength to lead with purpose, conviction, and courage. I am deeply grateful for every conversation, every email, and every show of support along the way. I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our exceptional city staff.
While I take this next step, I remain committed to fulfilling my duties until a special election is held and a new representative is duly elected. Given the demands of my legal studies, I will begin attending council meetings virtually and will reduce my day-to-day involvement in city matters.
As I prepare to pass the torch, I want to share my strong belief in who should carry it forward. I have had the privilege of working alongside and getting to know Lupe Gonzalez, a tireless advocate for our families and neighborhoods. Her leadership as PTA President of Farmers Branch Elementary, her deep roots in our community, and her proven ability to bring people together make her exactly the kind of leader District 1 needs. I wholeheartedly believe Lupe has the vision, dedication, and heart to continue building on the progress we've made, and I encourage our community to rally behind her.
Farmers Branch will always have my heart. Thank you for allowing me to serve.
