State Rep. Venton Jones, D-Dallas, presented a proclamation recognizing Pride Month to the Farmers Branch City Council during the Tuesday, June 17, meeting, marking a historic moment for the North Texas community.
Jones, who represents House District 100 and serves as chairman of the Dallas delegation and vice chair of the Texas House LGBTQ caucus, joined Councilmembers Omar Roman and Elizabeth Villafranca at the podium to present the resolution commemorating the contributions of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.
The proclamation acknowledged the significance of the 1969 Stonewall rebellion as "a critical turning point for the modern LGBTQ rights movement" and recognized the 56th anniversary of the watershed moment in U.S. history. The resolution emphasized that LGBTQ individuals represent "a thriving and contributing" part of the Farmers Branch community who "should feel safe and free from any fear of harassment, discrimination or persecution."
During the presentation, Jones congratulated Roman for "making history as one of the first LGBTQ members" to serve on the city council. The proclamation was also signed and supported by state Reps. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas, and Cassandra Garcia Hernandez, D-Dallas.
The resolution called for strengthening alliances, fostering greater understanding and advancing equal rights within the community. Jones emphasized that Pride Month serves as "an opportune time to reaffirm our commitment" to these values.
The proclamation formally recognized June as Pride Month in Farmers Branch, extending "sincere and best wishes" to all those participating in the observance throughout the city.
