Between spring cleaning, preparation for moving or desire to earn a bit of extra money, it’s the season for garage sales.
The City of Farmers Branch allows two garage sales per address each year. However, marketing garage sales can be dicey.
To make marketing easier, the Branch Herald offers free classified ads for people having garage sales or selling items in Farmers Branch. Users can include a photo or a logo and can have their address mapped to make it easier for shoppers to find the sale, although there is the option to opt out of the mapping feature. According to the Farmers Branch garage sale registration application (yes, garage sales are required to be registered with the city), garage sale signs must be at least 10 feet from the edge of the street and cannot be placed on public property, including on city signs, poles, medians or sidewalks. Signs may be placed on private property with permission of that property’s owner or occupant.
In addition, social media isn’t necessarily that friendly about marketing garage sales. Most Facebook groups don’t allow garage sales to be posted at all. Farmers Branch Moms, which requires members to be mothers to join, allows garage sales to be posted on the day of the sale as long as the posting is taken down as soon as the sale ends. Some people post garage sales on Nextdoor.
If you are thinking of going on a garage sale adventure, either shopping or holding one, don’t forget to peek at the Branch Herald classifieds.
The Branch Herald recommends that those who hold garage sales follow all policies of the City of Farmers Branch.
