Make plans to raise money while having fun

Posted

Turn a delicious breakfast, a thrilling game of pickleball or a night at the theater into a meaningful way to give back to the community.

A variety of entertaining events and activities are doubling as fund-raisers for local non-profit organizations, offering residents the opportunity to support worthwhile causes while enjoying themselves.

Metrocrest Services’ 20th Annual Keyholder Breakfast is around the corner, uniting the community and celebrating the mission of supporting people as they create a better future. Metrocrest Services provides housing stability assistance, financial coaching and education, employment coaching and job readiness, a food pantry and services both for seniors and children.

Fox 4 News Sports Director Mike Doocy will emcee the event.

CEO of Habitat for Humanity Dallas Ashley Owen Brundage will keynote breakfast. According to Metrocrest Services’ website, Brundage is committed to the “transformative power of affordable homeownership” and envisions strengthening advocacy platforms to create systemic change, scaling affordable housing and fostering public-private partnerships to break the cycle of poverty.

Metrocrest Services also will honor four volunteers who have each given more than 4,000 hours: Trinidad Martinez, Rev.  Dr. Richard Selby, Annemarie Griffin and Marilyn Horton.

Visit the keyholder registration site to register, donate or enter the raffle for a seven-day vacation to Cozumel, Mexico.

The Keyholder Breakfast is 7:30-9 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, at the Courtyard by Marriott Carrollton Conference Center.

Charity Golf Tournament

If a day on the greens is better than a week anywhere else, The Civic League has the perfect activity for you to give back to the community.

The Second Annual Charity Golf Tournament will be a “best ball scramble” with no handicaps on Monday, May 5 at Brookhaven Country Club, 3333 Golfing Green Dr. in Farmers Branch. There will be a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

Teams can register as a foursome, or individuals can register solo and join a team. The registration fee includes green fees, golf cart, range balls, tee gift, boxed lunch and post-play gathering with a Cinco de Mayo flair. Cost to register is $250-1,030.

The Civic Leagues requests all teams to refrain from including professionals, teaching professionals and college players to ensure a level playing field.

Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third-place teams. Special prizes will be given to those with the longest drive, closest to the hole and the putting contest.

The deadline to register is May 2.

Sponsorships opportunities are also available.

Flags Over Carrollton & Farmers Branch

Participate in the other fund-raising doesn’t preclude you from one additional activity that raises money for two community service organizations and showing patriotism in the process.

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Rotary Club teams up with Scouting America to lease American flags to residents of both cities for five holidays each year: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day to Patriot Day and Veterans Day.

For $55 per year, the rotary club places a PVC sleeve in the ground about 15 inches from the front sidewalk or curb and marks the curb with a small medallion.

On or before each of the designated holidays, local scouts deliver 3x5-foot American flags mounted on 10-foot metal poles and places them in the sleeve. Following the holiday, the scouts promptly remove the flags depending on the weather conditions.

Proceeds of this service project benefits the scout troops and the rotary’s scholarship and youth programs in the local area.
