Hernandez discusses 89th legislative session

Posted

COPPELL  — In the midst of a credible threat against Texas lawmakers, the killing of a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband and shooting of another lawmaker and his wife on Saturday morning, State Rep. Cassandra Hernandez met with constituents to update them on the legislative work that occurred in Austin during the 89th Legislative Session.

Meeting at the Coppell campus of Dallas College on June 14, Hernandez spoke about her experiences on the appropriations and intergovernmental affairs committees as well as the legislation that directly affects House District 115, which contains part of Farmers Branch, Addison, Carrollton, Dallas, Coppell, Irving and Grapevine.

Highlights of her presentation included a $2.1 million grant for Campion Trails Park in Irving that will provide the funding for the final 3.5-mile trail connection between existing trails and will complete the 22-mile trail system along the Elm Fork and West Elm Fork of the Trinity River and is part of a regional effort to join trail systems across Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, Coppell and Irving; the $8.5 billion school finance funding and the increase of the homestead exemption on property taxes, which, if signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, must go before voters in November and would raise the homestead exemption to $140,000 and to $200,000 for seniors and people with disabilities.

Hernandez spoke in detail about House and Senate bills that were on the governor’s desk as well as four bills that she primarily authored and were passed out of the House of Representatives but did not have enough time in the legislative process.

The Branch Herald is including Hernandez’s PowerPoint presentation as well as a recording that is on the Branch Herald’s YouTube site of Hernandez’s presentation.
