The Farmers Branch Fire Department's Fire Safety Fair was on Saturday, Sept. 28, and contained a multitude of activities for families and community members to learn about fire safety.
There was a vehicle extrication demo at 9:30 a.m. The team demonstrated “a b-side blowout, which is taking the entire side out of the car,” said Firefighter Phillip Hawk.
They used two tools to rip a door off the hinges of a car, “the spreaders, also known as the Jaws of Life, and we have what's called the cutters, which is pretty much a big pair of scissors,” said Hawk.
Also present was the Farmers Branch Animal Adoption Center.
“We were invited to highlight some of our adoptable animals,” said Tyler Winckler, the adoption center manager. “We get a lot of calls about bobcats, racoons, possums and skunks. We’re here to provide some education on wildlife interactions.”
Many other organizations within the city were present too: Code Enforcement, Economic Development, the Manske Library, Parks and Recreation and the Police Department.
A rope rescue scenario took place at 10:15 a.m., and a Branch Brigade clown performance at 11:00 a.m.
“We started this a couple of years ago,” said Chief Daniel Latimer, “we had this idea of… inviting the community to come see what we do and be part of our family.”
