Addison reviews town operations, advances airport master planning efforts

Posted

The Addison City Council reviewed efforts to improve municipal operations and considered updated recommendations for the Addison Airport Master Plan during its Oct. 27 meeting, including cost-saving measures, infrastructure improvements and proposed changes to future airport development.

The discussions are part of the town's ongoing efforts to evaluate municipal services, improve operational efficiency and plan for long-term infrastructure needs.

The town also has launched an internal review initiative examining how departments manage resources, deliver services and identify opportunities to reduce costs. The first review focused on the Public Works and Engineering Department's Line Maintenance Division, which is responsible for maintaining Addison's water and sewer infrastructure.

The evaluation examined the division's maintenance practices, resource management and methods for tracking work performed throughout the town.

Recommendations include improving equipment and inventory tracking, expanding the use of technology to analyze costs and performance, increasing service coverage on Fridays and developing a more proactive wastewater maintenance program.

The review also identified opportunities to reduce expenses by bringing certain services in-house rather than relying on outside providers.

According to the town, Public Works has already assumed responsibility for fire hydrant painting and testing, resulting in approximately $102,000 in savings.

Town staff will evaluate progress on the recommendations in one year, with plans to expand the review process to additional departments and operations.

During the same meeting, the Council received an update on the Addison Airport Master Plan, which is intended to guide future airport improvements, infrastructure investments and development.

Addison Airport Director Jaime Edrosa presented updated draft recommendations following a planning process that included community feedback and meetings with a council-appointed advisory committee.

One of the major proposals discussed was a potential 1,000-foot runway extension intended to accommodate southbound aircraft departures and reduce noise over an identified noise-sensitive area.

Following the presentation and discussion, the council directed staff to remove the proposed runway extension from the draft master plan.

Other recommendations under consideration include future taxiway improvements, redevelopment of airport property, upgrades to existing facilities and drainage improvements.

The plan also addresses the airport's relationship with surrounding neighborhoods, including continued voluntary noise-reduction efforts.

The Airport Master Plan Steering Committee recommended against adding a new parking area for visiting general aviation aircraft. Instead, the committee encouraged additional discussions between pilots and airport service providers regarding parking needs.

The updated Airport Master Plan is scheduled to return to the city council for consideration on Nov. 10.

If approved, the plan will be submitted to the Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration for review and approval.

The internal operations review and airport planning discussions represent separate initiatives aimed at addressing Addison's current service needs while preparing for future infrastructure and development demands.
