There’s a new way to cool off in Carrollton, and on an August afternoon in North Texas, the timing is pretty good.

Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard opens its new Carrollton location Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 4213 N. Josey Lane, part of a four-store North Texas expansion led by franchisee Kyle Wiborg.

Wiborg moved to the area from Chicago this spring to open the stores, taking over former Salad and Go locations and converting them into Rita’s shops. His first location opened July 1 in North Richland Hills.

Carrollton is next, followed by a Farmers Branch location at Josey Lane and Valley View Lane scheduled to open Oct. 14. A Flower Mound location is expected to open Dec. 1.

Rita’s, which started outside Philadelphia in 1984, has grown to more than 600 locations across the country. The company is known for its Italian ice and frozen custard, along with combinations such as its Gelati, which layers the two. The Italian ice is made fresh in the shop each day, with more than 100 flavors available on a rotating basis.

Wiborg isn’t opening the stores alone. His father, Steve Wiborg, has been helping with the North Texas openings, while Caleb Ridings, who will manage the Flower Mound location, is also helping get the new stores up and running.

The Carrollton store celebrated with a “Scoop-er Cutting” on Monday, Aug. 24, with the Metrocrest Area Chamber ahead of Wednesday’s grand opening.

For Wiborg, Carrollton is only the second stop in what will be a busy few months as he introduces Rita’s to more North Texas communities.
