Competitive Cameras is officially open in Farmers Branch, giving area photographers and videographers a new place to shop, rent equipment and get some hands-on help with their gear.
The longtime Dallas camera retailer opened its new location at 13614 Midway Road on Oct. 1 after relocating from the Dallas Design District. The larger store includes dedicated displays for major photography brands, along with cameras, lenses, lighting and accessories. The company also offers used equipment, trade-ins and camera and lens rentals.
The move also gives Competitive Cameras room to continue one of the things that distinguishes a specialty camera store from buying equipment online: putting equipment into customers' hands and helping them learn how to use it.
Several classes and manufacturer demonstrations are already scheduled at the Farmers Branch location.
Exposure 101 will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. The introductory class covers shutter speed, aperture, ISO and using a camera in manual mode. Participants are asked to bring their cameras with charged batteries.
A Sony Lens Demo Day follows from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. A Sony representative will bring several of the company's newest lenses, including ultra-wide and super-telephoto models, for photographers to try at the store.
On Saturday, Oct. 24, Competitive Cameras will offer Sony Alpha 101 and 102 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sessions range from learning the camera's menus, controls and basic exposure settings to more advanced autofocus, customization and other features.
Competitive Cameras is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The store is closed Sunday. More information about the store is available through Competitive Cameras, and upcoming classes and demonstrations are listed on its Eventbrite page.
