Mural artist Santos Lozano of Plano dedicated the chalk mural he created Wednesday, July 9, at Mercer Park to the flooding tragedy in Kerrville.
The City of Farmers Branch Parks and Recreation Department commissioned Lozano to create the piece for Parks and Recreation Month in July, with a theme of “community” and a focus on parks and recreation.
Lozano first created artwork for the city’s 2024 Gateway to the Globe multicultural celebration.
“For year two, we commissioned new art, and he delivered an incredible concept called, ‘Faces of the World,’ which celebrated cultures from around the globe,” wrote Christian Grisales, City of Farmers Branch public information officer, in an email to the Branch Herald. “To strengthen and build our relationship, we asked if he was interested in other events. He expressed genuine enthusiasm and shared that he creates artwork for a wide range of occasions and would like to be part of other events.”
Grisales wrote that Lozano embraced the concept and brought it to life, sharing his sketches and ideas in advance.
Originally from McAllen, Lozano has lived in Plano since December 2000, and has teaches at Mathews Elementary.
“I enjoy teaching elementary kids because deep inside I am a kid at heart when it comes to art,” he wrote in an email to the Branch Herald.

The mural was one of a variety of activities the city's park and recreation department is offering in July.
"The goal of Parks and Recreation Month is to show that parks and recreation is an integral part of communities throughout this country, as stated in the proclamation presented to staff by Mayor Lynne at the Aquatics Center's 10-year Anniversary on July 10, 2025," Grisales wrote. This is the first time the city has offered these events, and Grisales said they have been well-received by residents.
