Addison Citizens Academy offers behind-the-scenes look at town government

Posted

Addison residents interested in learning how their town works have until Aug. 21 to apply for the 2026 Addison Citizens Academy.

The seven-session program gives residents a behind-the-scenes look at Addison government, from public safety and municipal finance to parks, economic development and Addison Airport. Participants will meet town leaders and staff, tour facilities and get a closer look at the equipment and services used to keep Addison running.

The academy is designed to help residents better understand local government while encouraging greater civic involvement. The program is also intended to prepare residents who may be interested in serving on town advisory boards or becoming more involved in the community.

The 2026 Citizens Academy begins Oct. 3 and includes seven sessions:

  • Saturday, Oct. 3 at 8 a.m. — City Council, City Manager's Office, City Secretary's Office, municipal finance, special events and marketing and tourism.
  • Saturday, Oct. 10 at 8 a.m. — Municipal Court, Addison Police Department and Addison Fire Department.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 11:30 a.m. — North Texas Emergency Communications Center.
  • Saturday, Oct. 17 at 8 a.m. — Public Works and Engineering and Parks and Recreation.
  • Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8 a.m. — Economic Development, Development and Neighborhood Services and Addison Airport.
  • Friday, Oct. 30, time to be determined — Addison partner agencies.
  • A Tuesday in November or December at 7 p.m., date to be determined — Addison City Council meeting.

The schedule is subject to change. Presentations will be led by Addison's city manager, department directors and other town staff. Participants will also tour town facilities and have opportunities to interact directly with employees.

The academy is part of Addison's broader effort to develop future community leaders. Addison's 2026-27 Strategic Plan specifically calls for hosting an annual Citizens Academy as part of its goal of creating a "Vibrant, Active, and Engaged Community."

Participation costs $50, and space is limited to 24 people. Applications opened July 17 and will be accepted through Friday, Aug. 21.
