The Westwood School will celebrate its 40th anniversary this spring at its new campus in Addison.
Founded in 1986 as a Montessori school by Pam Butler, the school, previously located across the street in Farmers Branch, outgrew its building and split into two campuses, on in the building now occupied by Trivium Academy, the other around the corner on Proton Drive in Addison, with the elementary students separated from the high school students, making it difficult for students, faculty and parents to create relationships, said Head of School Heather Laurcey.
"What we wanted, and what we truly needed was to be together," said Kelly Nelson, director of admissions and development, in her introduction to the Metrocrest Area Chamber, who provided the school with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 22.
Now located in the four-story Midway Atriums III building at 14295 Midway Rd., the new space provides the school with 88,000 square feet, not including a gymnasium currently under construction and the space to grow to 400 students.
"It's made so much difference in four months," Laurcey said. "It's everyone back together ... it's me. I get to see everyone every day."
The morning of the ribbon cutting, the school had a doughnuts with dad event, which Laurcey said she previously would only have the opportunity to see half the parents because of the two buildings, but on that day, she had the opportunity to see them all.
Following speeches, cheers from the cheer team and a speech by two Westwood Seniors, Happy Win and Cate Crozier, Nelson gave chamber members a tour of the building, which includes new quiet study areas, updated labs, a state-of-the-art black box theatre with capacity to seat 120 and a new IBeanerry coffee shop.
