The CFBISD Transportation Department had a strong first day of school, ensuring that more than 3,000 students across 77 routes safely arrived at school by bus to kick off the 2026–27 school year. That smooth start was the result of months of preparation, training and teamwork behind the scenes. Now, the department is taking the next step by investing in the people who keep the district moving.

"While the first day of school can be challenging, the preparation and training provided throughout the summer made a significant difference for our team," said Assistant Director of Transportation Jeremy Smith.

To prepare for the launch of the school year, the department recruited 13 new drivers, fully staffing its bus routes for the first day. This allowed office personnel to be available throughout the day to answer phone calls, assist families and support campuses.

Led by Safety and Training Supervisor Phyllis McAlpin, 135 new and returning drivers and monitors completed mandatory special-needs and bus-evacuation training, combining classroom instruction with hands-on practice. The team also audited driver credentials, and five trainees successfully earned their commercial driver’s licenses over the summer to begin driving on opening day.

That focus on preparation will continue throughout the school year. In September, the department plans to launch a new mentorship program for drivers and monitors to boost staff retention, safety and morale. Under this initiative, seasoned bus monitors with five to 12 years of experience will help guide new monitors on professional etiquette, student management expectations and family communication. Mentors will also host monthly employee-relations events.

"Our goal is to strengthen teamwork and support long-term employee retention," said Director of Transportation Donna Cox. "This program will reinforce safety practices, mentor new hires and support current drivers facing route challenges."
