Runners, students and families will gather Saturday morning at Tommy Standridge Stadium for the annual Kacie’s Run, a community tradition that raises money to support student athletes in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District (CFBISD) Special Olympics program.

Students from R.L. Turner High School created a video to encourage residents and students to participate in the event, which began as a student-led effort more than two decades ago and has grown into a districtwide event that brings together students, teachers, families and community members. Proceeds from the run help ensure that CFBISD special education students can participate in Special Olympics activities at no cost. Watch the video here. (Editor's Note: The Kacie's Run video was created by Branch Herald intern Adin Braswell.)

The event, scheduled for March 7, includes a 5K run and a 1-mile family fun run benefiting the district’s All Stars Special Olympics team. Check-in begins at 7 a.m., with the family run starting at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K at 9 a.m. An awards ceremony follows at 10 a.m.

Hosted by CFBISD, Kacie’s Run honors the memory of Kacie Brekhus, a former R.L. Turner High School student known for her dedication to Special Olympics athletes. Brekhus became involved in the Special Olympics Torch Run as a freshman and later served as a student coordinator before her death in a traffic accident in 2003 while attending the University of Texas at Austin.
