Starbucks to replace Wendy's location

Posted

After three decades, the Wendy's restaurant at 4169 LBJ Fwy. will soon transform into a Starbucks, bringing the popular coffee chain to one of the city's most visible commercial corners.

The Farmers Branch City Council unanimously approved the transition Tuesday, August 5, marking the end of an era for the fast-food location that has operated under the same permit since January 1993.

"We look forward to having Starbucks in our community. Man, what a great partner," Mayor Terry Lynne said during the meeting, adding that the coffee shop should thrive given the multifamily development directly across the street.

The project will renovate the existing 3,500-square-foot building while maintaining the drive-through service that made the location popular with commuters. Lead Planner Brett Mangum said that the new design improves traffic flow and can "conservatively hold about 12 cars" in the drive-through lane.

Beyond the branding change, Starbucks plans improvements to the 0.86-acre site. The company will replace three employee parking spaces with additional landscaping and add a splitter island to "better delineate the drive-through traffic and direct it towards the building," Mangum said.

The location sits in a prime commercial corridor surrounded entirely by businesses, with no residential properties immediately adjacent. The change aligns with the city's 2045 Comprehensive Plan, which envisions mixed-use development for the area.

Despite proper public notification procedures, the city received no public comments opposing or supporting the proposal.
