New performing arts series brings laughs, music, energy to town

Posted

Local standout musicians and performers will shine in the spotlight this fall with a trio of special performances as part of The Firehouse Theatre's all-new Performing Arts Series – spanning a variety of genres including improv, instrumental and cabaret. The series of programs includes "Totally Made-Up Musical," Beatlegras and a special holiday show starring Bethany Lorentzen.

"Totally Made-Up Musical" will kick-off the new series on Sunday, November 2 (7:30 PM). It’s a completely improvised musical comedy where the plot, songs, and show title are created on the spot from audience suggestions. (Think Broadway meets "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" with extra jazz hands!) The cast features some of DFW’s funniest actors and singers – including Firehouse favorites Jason Philip Solís and Grant Hollowell.

Then, on Saturday, November 8 (7:30 PM), Beatlegras, the celebrated trio of Dave Walser, George Anderson, and multi-instrumentalist Milo Deering, will bring their inventive, high-energy takes on The Beatles’ catalog with "Beatlegras: In Concert." Formed in 2003, Beatlegras has performed in venues across the globe – from Seattle to Dallas to Ireland – reuniting in 2022 after an eleven-year hiatus, “because it was just too much fun not to do.” Audiences can expect a “Magical Mystery Tour” through the genius of The Beatles. This is not an imitation, but a virtuosic reimagination!

On Wednesday, December 17 (7:30 PM), powerhouse vocalist and entertainer Bethany Lorentzen will return to her “Firehouse Home” with a one-night-only holiday performance entitled "Tinsel & Tunes: A Very Merry Night with Bethany Lorentzen. A Dallas theatre veteran and former frontline singer/choreographer with DFW’s Emerald City Band, Lorentzen has performed nationwide and internationally for clients including FedEx, Barrett-Jackson, and the American Heart Association. Expect an intimate evening of holiday favorites, sparkling vocals, and plenty of heart.

ARTISTS BACKGROUND

Beatlegras
Born from a “what if?” studio experiment in 2003, Beatlegras fuses bluegrass roots, jazz-classical-R&B bass, and multi-instrumental wizardry to reimagine Beatles songs with fresh arrangements and fearless musicianship. After touring widely from 2004–2011, the trio reunited in 2022—and the joy is contagious.

Bethany Lorentzen
DFW-based singer/entertainer Bethany Lorentzen has performed across the U.S. and abroad (France, Spain, Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica) for clients including FedEx, Barrett-Jackson, and the American Heart Association. On DFW stages she’s known as a dynamic vocalist, music director, and choreographer; Firehouse audiences last saw her as Daisy in Side Show. Professional credits include Uptown Players (A Chorus Line), Phoenix Theatre (Les Misérables, Spring Awakening, Hairspray), and Arizona Broadway Theatre (Miracle on 34th Street).

Totally Made-Up Musical
A full musical created in real time—complete with original songs, choreography, drama, and delightful chaos. No script. Just fearless performers, audience suggestions, and a lot of laughs. Featuring Firehouse favorites Jason Philip Solís and Grant Hollowell.
