McLaughlin Strickland receives Yellow Library donation

Kendra Scott Foundation, H-E-B provides diverse, bilingual books

CFBISD, in partnership with H-E-B and the Kendra Scott Foundation, unveiled its first Yellow Library at McLaughlin Strickland Elementary School. Through this statewide initiative, the campus will receive more than 250 new, diverse, and bilingual books, transforming a corner of the library into a vibrant hub of literature and fostering a love of reading among students.

“Early literacy plays a critical role in a child’s academic success, and this library provides students with engaging books that encourage a love of reading at an early age,” said Principal Beth Chamberlin. “This gift will have a lasting impact on our students for years to come.”

The initiative, secured through a grant application submitted by campus librarian Misty Davis, represents a powerful collaboration between two Texas-based powerhouses dedicated to education and community representation.

“We are so grateful for organizations that value the importance of early childhood literacy and make books like these accessible for our kids,” Davis said. “It’s a great feeling knowing that there are people who want to partner with us to give our children the best education possible.”

The Yellow Library program is designed to bridge the literacy gap by providing students with "window and mirror" books. These stories allow students to see themselves reflected in the stories they read and also peer into the lives of others.

“The Yellow Library ensures students have access to stories that reflect their own experiences while also introducing them to new perspectives,” Chamberlin said. “That kind of representation helps build confidence, empathy and a lifelong connection to reading.”

The new library will serve as a cornerstone for campus literacy celebrations and daily learning. The infusion of new, educator-selected titles ensures that students have the resources necessary to develop the 21st-century skills required for academic success.

By integrating these resources into the heart of McLaughlin Strickland, CFBISD is thrilled to continue promoting the idea that every child deserves the opportunity to become a lifelong reader.
