Los Stangs, Mariachi Mesteno to perform at football game

Posted

Creekview High School’s Los Stangs Folklorico Co. and Mariachi Mesteno will perform at Noche de Hispanidad before the school’s varsity football game Thursday, Oct. 17.

The groups will perform at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Standridge Stadium, 1330 Valwood Pkwy. in Carrollton.

Noche de Hispanidad is an annual Hispanic-heritage event founded three years ago by Karla Hardaway, program director, and Coach Tony Castillo, Creekview’s former athletic director as a way to connect with the community through cultural celebrations during football games during Hispanic Heritage Month.

According to the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District (CFBISD), Hardaway has advocated for Ballet Folklorico to become a University Interscholastic League-sanctioned event.

In addition, the Los Stangs Folklorico Co. received a $6,000 grant from the Credit Union of Texas Charitable Foundation to purchase 24 custom-made dresses representing the state of Jalisco, Mexico.

Many middle and high schools within CFBISD, including Creekview High School, R.L. Turner High School and Vivian Field Middle School, all of which serve Farmers Branch students, offer students opportunities to learn folklorico dance. Students in Creekview’s Los Stangs Folklorico Co. must pass auditions and maintain academic and disciplinary records like other varsity groups.
