Local races take shape ahead of May elections

Posted

Local races are solidifying as the May 2026 election nears.

Races are expected in Farmers Branch, Carrollton and Addison as well as the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District Board of Trustees.

In the Farmers Branch mayoral race, Rink Dasai and Jaime Rivas will challenge incumbent Mayor Terry Lynne.

Brenda Broderick will face off for the second time against incumbent Tina Bennett-Burton for the District 2 City Council position. They faced each other in the November 2024 Special Election following the resignation of City Council Member Martin Baird.

In the City of Farmers Branch, the mayor and all city council members are elected for terms of three years.

City council members in the Town of Addison are elected at large for two-year terms. Incumbent Council Members Chris DeFrancisco, Howard Freed and Darren Gardner’s seats are up for election. All three have filed applications for re-election and are joined by Trish Stuart and Schnell Blanton.

The candidates who receive the highest number of valid votes in the election shall be declared elected, according to the Town of Addison. Council members serve two-year terms.

Residents of the City of Carrollton will vote for mayor and City Council Places 2, 4 and 6, all of whom are elected at large. Council members serve three-year terms.

Zul Mohamed will challenge incumbent Mayor Steve Babick.

Incumbents Jason Carpenter and Daisy Palomo will face Lisa Sutter, Michael Song and Thomas Chellethe.

Filings in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District Board of Trustees race show four candidates for three open trustee positions: incumbent Carolyn Benavides and Luis Paloma, both of whom reside in Carrollton, Cinthya Noda of Farmers Branch and Dave Jimenez of Coppell.

Each governing body will hold a drawing to determine the order the candidates’ names appear on the ballot. Farmers Branch’s drawing will be 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19. Carrollton’s drawing will be 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, and Addison's will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23.

The drawing for the CFBISD Board of Trustees will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at the school’s administration building at 1445 N. Perry Rd. in Carrollton.

The Branch Herald will provide all candidates with questionnaires, which will be published in March. Plans for candidate forums are in progress.

In addition, the Town of Addison called a bond election for $55 million to design, construct and equip a new police station.

The City of Carrollton called a bond election for five propositions: $164.5 million for street projects, $32.3 million for public safety facilities, $26.5 million for parks and recreation facilities, $7.85 million for municipal court facilities and $3.8 million for library facilities.
