Garcia Hernandez makes statement on Congressional redistricting hearing

Proposed changes may affect House District 115, which includes areas of Farmers Branch

ARLINGTON, TX - Vice Chair Cassandra Garcia Hernandez issued the following statement ahead of today's House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting hearing at the University of Texas at Arlington:

"Before the House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting convened this evening, I proudly joined my fellow North Central Texas House Democrats in rallying against this blatant Trump-led takeover of Texas.

"This hearing represents one of the few opportunities for millions of North Texans to speak directly to lawmakers about how this redistricting will impact their lives— and yet, it is limited to just five hours. In light of that, I have made the decision to yield my testimony time to allow constituents from districts targeted by this egregious gerrymandering effort to be heard.

"House District 115 stands to be directly affected by proposed changes to Congressional Districts 32 and 33 Texas District 32—my own congressional district—is currently under committee review, while Texas District 33 was explicitly referenced in the Department of Justice letter from the Trump Administration. This is not only a matter of public policy-it is personal to me, and deeply consequential for the people I am honored to serve. Our community is on the chopping block, and I will be on the dais, listening intently and documenting every voice that comes forward.

"I stand firmly with my fellow Texas House Democrats in opposition to this attempt to silence and further disenfranchise voters, in particular from minority communities. At a time when our focus should be on delivering relief, finding answers, and putting safeguards in place to prevent tragedies like the Hill Country floods, Texas Republicans are instead allowing Washington, D.C. politicians to dictate our agenda.

"I look forward to joining my colleagues, and our North Texas community at this afternoon's hearing to continue shining a light on this undemocratic attempt to rig our elections. These aren't Trump's maps, they're our maps."

Vice Chair Cassandra Garcia Hernandez is serving in her first term in the Texas House of Representatives and proudly works for the people of Addison, Carrollton, Coppell, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Lewisville, and Irving.
