Farmers Branch recognized for sustainability efforts

Posted

The City of Farmers Branch announced its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold for Cities certification, which measures the city’s progress on sustainability efforts.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded LEED Gold on Jan. 6, 2026. The certification evaluated 9 categories: Integrative Process, Natural Systems, Transportation and Land Use, Energy and Emissions, Water Efficiency, Materials and Resources, Quality of Life, Innovation, and Regional Priority.

LEED serves as a benchmark for the city's sustainability progress and will guide future efforts, said Alex Pharmakis, the sustainability manager for Farmers Branch. “It was great to see that we were able to get gold in kind of a short amount of time,” said Pharmakis.

In 2025, Farmers Branch joined 15 other local governments in a national LEED for Cities cohort program.  Throughout the year, Pharmakis and his team worked alongside other city departments to gather the information for the certification.

The city also collected data from regional partners such as DART, Metrocrest  Services and Dallas College to help evaluate the quality of life and transportation categories.

Overall, the city earned 67 of 110 points, surpassing the 40 point minimum  for the  lowest level of LEED certification – certified – and the 50 point minimum for LEED Silver.

“The city is committed to sustainability efforts, and we're always working to improve,” Pharmakis said.

In addition to LEED Gold, Farmers Branch has received two other distinctions since launching the sustainability plan in 2022, including a Texan by Nature award and a SolSmart Bronze designation.
