Farmers Branch residents can clear unwanted items from their properties Saturday, Oct. 24, as the city focusus on the second in a series of neighborhood cleanups through its Code Care program.
The October cleanup will focus on the area around Barney Wood Bark Park, 14090 Heartside Place, in District 2. City staff began canvassing the neighborhood Oct. 15 to prepare residents.
Residents should place regular trash in garbage bags at the curb. Standard bulk items should also be placed curbside for collection the following week by the city's knuckle-boom truck, known as the "Green Grabber."
Larger amounts of remodeling or whole-home-cleanout debris should be placed in a Waste Management Bagster.
Items that cannot be collected include batteries, electronics, automotive fluids, chemicals, oil-based paints, tires, propane tanks and hazardous materials.
Residents who miss the cleanup or need help with bulk pickup items can call 972-919-2613.
The city has scheduled additional Code Care canvassing and cleanup events throughout Farmers Branch.
Upcoming cleanups include Mercer Park, 12700 Chartwell Crest, on Nov. 14; Oakbrook Ken Rymer Park, 3550 Oakbrook Parkway, on Dec. 19; Kerr Park, 13226 Kerr Trail, on Jan. 23; and Squire Park, 2531 Richland Ave., on Feb. 13.
Each location will have a neighborhood canvassing event before its cleanup.
In addition, Farmers Branch offers a Minor Home Repair Program to help qualifying homeowners make essential exterior repairs.
The program provides grants of up to $5,000 for eligible projects, including roofing, fencing, exterior painting, window and door replacement, tree trimming and walkway repairs.
The program addresses deteriorating conditions, improves neighborhood safety and assists homeowners who lack the resources to complete necessary repairs.
Eligible properties must be owner-occupied, single-family homes within Farmers Branch. Additional requirements include property value limits, current property taxes and mortgage payments, and active homestead exemptions.
The program does not cover cosmetic remodeling, previously completed repairs or projects started before city approval.
Funding is limited and awarded first-come, first-served. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee approval.
