Early voting underway for Texas Primary

Voters must check ballots, election day voting locations

Posted

Local voters in Farmers Branch, Addison and Carrollton can now cast ballots for statewide offices, U.S. Senate and House of Representative seats, state legislative offices and key county roles, including justices of the peace and constables.

Early voting for Texas’s primary election started Feb. 17 and runs through Feb. 27 with Election Day set for March 3. Texas primaries determine which Democratic and Republican nominees advance to the November general election. Sample ballots vary by address, especially in Carrollton, which lies in both Dallas and Denton counties, so residents in different parts of the cities may see different races.

Most state and county offices, including justice of the peace and constable, are partisan races so voters must choose a party ballot for those contests.

Voters in Dallas County should visit the Dallas County Election Department website to see their sample ballot and find their voting location.

This primary will be different than other elections in the recent past in Dallas County. During early voting, voters of both parties may vote at any of the county's 74 Early Vote Centers. However, on Election Day, voters must go to their precinct location, which may not be the location they have voted at in the past. While Dallas County has 280 voting locations for Election Day for voters choosing the Democratic primary ballot and 243 locations for voters choosing the Republican primary ballot, voters may vote only at their assigned precinct.

The simplest way to find that location is for voters to search vote centers on the Dallas County Election Department website.

State Representative seats for the Texas House also are on the Primary ballot. Districts 103 and 115 include parts of Farmers Branch, Carrollton and Addison. Texas House District 65 includes northern Carrollton, and Texas House District 63 includes southwestern and south-central Denton County, including some Carrollton residents.

Denton County residents should visit the Denton County Election Department website for their specific voting information.

Congressional districts have changed

Texas implemented new congressional boundaries last year, after the 2020 Census. The U.S. Supreme Court allowed the state’s updated congressional map to proceed for 2026, despite ongoing legal challenges to part of it.

As a result, Farmers Branch and Carrollton fall in Texas’s 24th and 32nd Congressional districts for the U.S. House. Some voters in Carrollton fall into the 26th Congressional District, because part of the city falls into Denton County. Addison lies within the 32nd Congressional District. However, Congressional District 32 was not redistricted, so Addison and parts of Farmers Branch and Carrollton will not be affected.

Other items on ballot

Other contests on the primary ballots include U.S. Senator, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller of Public Accounts, Commissioner of the General Land Office, Commissioner of Agriculture, Railroad Commissioner, Chief Justice and other justices of the Texas Supreme Court, multiple judges and justices, State Board of Education, Dallas County Criminal District Attorney, County Judge, District Clerk, County Clerk, County Treasurer and county chairs for the Republican and Democratic parties.

The Democratic Primary ballot includes numerous races that do not appear on the Republican ballot, including Justice of the Peace, Precinct 5, Places 1 and 2, and Constable for Precinct 5, because no Republican candidates filed for those races.

In addition, there are numerous propositions and/or survey questions on the ballots, which differ between the Democratic and Republican ballots.
