Farmers Branch City Council

Council fires city attorney

Posted

The Farmers Branch City Council voted Tuesday, Nov. 18, to terminate its legal services agreement with Wyatt Hamilton Findlay PLLC and authorize the city manager to secure new legal representation, marking the second major change in city attorneys in just over a year.

The decision comes 14 months after the council hired the firm in September 2024 following an extensive selection process that began with a request for proposals in March 2024. The city interviewed multiple candidates in executive sessions throughout the summer before selecting Wyatt Hamilton Findlay to replace Nichols, Jackson, Dillard, Hagar and Smith LLP.

Council members provided no public explanation for the termination, which came after executive session. The motion authorized City Manager Ben Williamson "to take all actions necessary to transition legal services, including terminating the city's current legal services agreement."

The rapid turnover raises questions about the city's legal representation stability during a critical period when Farmers Branch is navigating complex issues including potential withdrawal from Dallas Area Rapid Transit and managing significant commercial development projects.

The city must now conduct another attorney search, the second comprehensive legal services procurement process in less than two years.
