The City of Farmers Branch hosts a tree giveaway every year. The next tree giveaway is slated for Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024 at Dallas College's Brookhaven Campus. In order to receive a free tree, residents are required to pre-register. There is a limit of one tree per household.
The registration link for the giveaway will go live on the city’s website on September 24, 2024 at 12 p.m. Those who complete registration for a tree and fail to pick it up at the event on Oct. 12 will forfeit their tree.
This program is part of the city’s sustainability goals. The projected 20-year values of the free tree giveaway include giving away 400 trees, saving 360, 894 kWh, $77,400 combined energy savings, 2.33 million gallons of stormwater intercepted, 937,536 pounds of carbon dioxide sequestered and 1,798 pounds of air pollution removed.
According to the city’s website, the trees benefit residents in multiple ways and “a healthy tree canopy is vital to improving the quality of life in a city.” Trees provide multiple environmental, economic and health benefits including: mitigating urban heat, providing shade, reducing air pollution, reducing energy usage and increasing biodiversity.
