Carrollton residents interested in serving their community have until Sept. 4 to apply for appointments to one of the city's 10 boards, commissions and committees.
The volunteer groups advise the Carrollton City Council on topics ranging from parks and libraries to planning, traffic and neighborhood improvements.
Residents can learn more at a Boards & Commissions Meet & Greet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Carrollton City Hall, 1945 E. Jackson Road. City staff, board members and City Council members will be available to answer questions about each group's responsibilities.
Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
The available boards and commissions include:
Capital Improvements Plan Advisory Committee (CIPAC): Advises the City Council on long-term capital planning, budgeting and bond projects.
Firefighters' and Police Officers' Civil Service Commission: Hears appeals involving Carrollton Fire Rescue and the Carrollton Police Department and oversees civil service testing and promotions.
Library Board: Recommends improvements to library services and programs.
Museum & Historic Advisory Committee (MHAC): Advises on preserving Carrollton's historic sites and cultural resources.
Neighborhood Advisory Commission (NAC): Provides recommendations on neighborhood reinvestment, housing grants and beautification efforts.
Parks & Recreation Advisory Board: Advises on parks, recreation programs, facilities and related policies.
Planning & Zoning Commission (P&Z): Reviews development proposals and makes recommendations on zoning, subdivisions and the city's comprehensive plan.
Property Standards Board (PSB): Hears appeals involving substandard properties, building and fire codes, and related ordinances.
Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 1 (TIRZ): Oversees the reinvestment plan and financing for the city's tax increment reinvestment zone.
Traffic Advisory Committee (TAC): Reviews traffic safety concerns and recommends improvements.
Applicants must have lived in Carrollton for at least one year, be registered voters, meet additional eligibility requirements outlined in the city charter and maintain a satisfactory record of attendance if they have previously served on a city board.
City Council is expected to consider appointments in October, with new members beginning their terms in November. Applications are accepted year-round for future vacancies.
