Carrollton offers full month of music, meetings and family activities

From live music and art to free CPR training, library programs and City Council meetings, Carrollton residents will have plenty of opportunities to connect, learn and get involved throughout August.

Sounds on the Square – August 7

Join the City of Carrollton for the Sounds on the Square music series from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, August 7, in Historic Downtown Carrollton (1106 S. Broadway Street). This community-focused live music series highlights the Downtown Square with monthly performances from talented local artists and performers. This month’s performer is Emery Dunham accompanied by her sister, London, on both electric and classical guitars.

Come early to grab a bite from one of the many eclectic restaurants and then shop at the unique stores and boutiques surrounding the square. Attendees are encouraged to bring friends, family, and some lawn chairs to get cozy. For more information, call 972-466-9135.

Thursday Night Dance – August 6

Want to transform an ordinary Thursday into something extraordinary? Join the Carrollton Senior Center (1720 Keller Springs Road) for Thursday Night Dance. Held every Thursday evening from 7-9:15 p.m., the event features a variety of entertainers and complimentary refreshments. Participants must be 50 years old or older and possess a valid Senior Center membership or day pass, or be accompanied by someone who does. The admission fee is $5 for residents and $7 for non-residents. For more information, call 972-466-4850.

CPR/AED Training – August 8

Sudden cardiac arrest is a survivable event, but usually only with bystander intervention before Emergency Medical Services arrive. Join Carrollton Fire Rescue on Saturday, August 8 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Carrollton Fire Administration building (1111 W. Belt Line Road #100) to receive free CPR and AED use training. This class primarily focuses on compression-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), while also covering choking and child & infant CPR.

This course is not for those needing a nationally accredited course completion card, such as the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. For more information, call 972-466-9811.

The Quarterly Art Gallery – August 8

Experience art at the Rosemeade Recreation Center on Saturday, August 8 from 10-11 a.m. The opening reception is free and open to the public. Meet this month’s featured artists, Yoon Okkoo and Jins Kim.

City Council Meeting – August 11

All are invited to attend the next Carrollton City Council meeting on Tuesday, August 11. The worksession will begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber located on the second floor of City Hall (1945 E. Jackson Road). Meetings typically occur on the first and third Tuesday of each month, with minutes becoming available after the Council adopts them, usually at subsequent meetings.

Paws to Read – August 16

Children ages 5-12 are invited to practice reading aloud to the Library’s therapy dog during Paws to Read at Hebron & Josey Library (4220 N. Josey Lane) on Sunday, August 16, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Hershey, the Library’s certified therapy dog, will be available to listen and help kids build confidence in their reading skills. Seating is limited, and tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, 15 minutes before the program begins. Lunch and Chat with Carrollton Police Department – August 26

The Carrollton Police Department invites residents ages 50 and over to a free lunch and chat on Wednesday, August 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will receive up-to-date public safety information, learn current trends that will help them become harder targets for criminals, and discuss other topics that can improve their quality of life. Library Card Sign-up Month

Celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month this September by registering for a library card and getting a voucher for the Friends of the Carrollton Public Library Book Sale, along with a chance to be entered into a prize drawing. Existing cardholders can participate in the month-long challenges. A library card unlocks access to a diverse range of free resources, including books, audiobooks, movies, programs, and more.
