Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. The organization estimates 321,910 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women nationwide in 2026. More than 2,670 men also will be diagnosed this year.
Regular mammograms can detect breast cancer before symptoms develop, when treatment may be more effective.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that women ages 40 to 74 who are at average risk for breast cancer receive a mammogram every two years, following guidance from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
The American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 40 to 44 have the option of beginning annual screenings, women ages 45 to 54 receive annual mammograms, and women 55 and older continue annually or switch to every two years.
Women with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors may need earlier or additional screening and should discuss their individual risks with their health care provider.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed each October to promote education, screening and support for those affected by the disease.
